Over the Hill… Nah

Always one for great ideas, Jansen decided to celebrate his birthday up on a hill, literally, this year – Tamarind Hill, to be exact.  Nestled on a quiet slope of lush greenery that is the Labrador Nature Reserve, the property overlooks (just barely, because of the dense trees) the sea.

At cocktails, he posed for photos with each member of his guests (captured no less, by a social photographer).  To find your designated seat, you only need to look for the placard with your name and a lovely button pin bearing a picture of you!

While the main menu consisted of Thai favourites, the starter was a Western quartet of bite size morsels consisting of salmon, calamari, chicken and shrimp.

The highlight of the evening was when Jansen came up with a game for all to take part.  In a bag, each guest had to select 4 other button pins.  Each of this depicted a different photo of every one of the guests.  So in total each guest would have 5 button pins with different his/her likeness on them!

Jansen then had to scroll through his ipad until someone shouts “Stop”!  The picture of whoever photo was displayed on the screen won a trip to Bangkok with Jansen (at a later date), and the person who won has a chance to select another guest to go along.  The catch was that he/she had to select from the four buttons that he picked from the bag!

Much friendly banter came about because of this; guests were cajoling Jansen and attempting to guilt him to showing favour for the prize!  But he held firm!  So the “winners” were Julie and Kevin.  A great idea for a “game” and I will adapt it for a future party if I was going to have one!

Yes, its that time of the year when the bidthday looms close… And for this year, I was taking off to Seoul with some close friends of mine for a short trip (more of that later…)

Kong offered to cook dinner Saturday night but didn’t offer any other information.  He does this occasionally so I didn’t think anything of it…  When I arrived, a group of my close friends flew out from the various rooms all dressed up… like me! They claimed that the theme was an homage to my style. LOL… Judge from the photo…

And the food, oh the food… James contributed nasi ulam, opor ayam and kerabu nanas while Kong made his famous curry yong tau foo. Vik contributed his delicious stewed chicken with chestnuts while Meng Hee brought a delicious finger-lickin’ mango salad.

For desserts we had cheng tng made by Toon’s in-law with sumptuous cupcakes doubling as birthday cake.. and washed down with Yuan’s bubbly rose champagne.

I sat with Chee Meng to blow out the candles as it was his birthday just a few days ago…

Games People Play

I am glad that my constant nagging at friends to do some form of exercise (as we get older) to keep alert and ‘tune’ our bodies yielded some positive results.

The badminton sessions are both  exhilarating and unfortunate. Former cos it really allows bonding and competition while building cardio… latter cos it also claimed several ‘victims’ in terms of sprained ankles and calf muscles… (no doubt caused by ill-fitting shoes and lack of proper warm-ups).

Now we are ‘experimenting’ with bowling… these photos here do not tell the real story as they looked like we are at a photo session.. hahaha…

A Date With Badminton

ready to serve…

I love these badminton dates I have with my friends every weekend.  It’s something that I cherish, for the exercise and for the opportunity to bond as well as seeing parts of Singapore that I never usually would.

Why?  Becos you can only book the court up to 2 weeks prior to the actual date, and usually as soon as the clock strikes 1 second pass midnight on a Friday, Alvin would furiously try and find an available court.  This means we get whatever venue that we can find.  This translates into travelling all over Singapore to play, and we really do get to explore parts of Singapore that we would never would have been to…

Two grouses though, there are NEVER enough badminton courts and most of these courts are inside a multi-purpose hall which means the flooring is not ideal for badminton – will the Sports Singapore please look into this?!!

badminton trio – i am in the middle… yes, that’s me!
